Experience the wild and the wonderful in South Africa

Many choose a South African holiday in order to experience the country’s famous safaris. While the Big 5 are best spotted here, there are plenty of other reasons to visit this fantastic destination, including amazing urban beaches, national wonders like Table Mountain and more.

Meet the Big 5 on a Safari
South Africa is one of the best places in the world to come face-to-face with the Big 5. There are plenty of safari parks to choose from, but Kruger National Park is possibly one of the most popular. Here you’ll have the chance to witness elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and zebra go about their day. In addition, hundreds of other mammals and exotic birds can be spotted in the park’s tropical forests. Other safari destinations to check out include Sabi Sands, Madikwe Private Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park.

Cape Town & Johannesburg
Cape Town is a vibrant city surrounded by incredible natural beauty. Here you’ll find the magnificent Table Mountain National Park and some of the world’s best urban beaches including Camps Bay and Boulders Beach where you might catch a glimpse of endangered African penguins. To learn more about South Africa’s history, head to Johannesburg where there are lots of great museums, including the Apartheid Museum, offering insight into the country’s troubled past.

Marvel at Table Mountain
The flat-topped mountain is an iconic South African landmark and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. You can hike it, you can abseil off the top of it, just make sure you don’t miss it.

So when’s best to see South Africa?
Well, the weather all depends on which region you want to visit. For example, in Cape Town and the Western Cape winter temperatures and rain is from June to August. During this time, the rest of the country is dry and hot, with their heavy rainfall hitting between December and March and a dry winter season from May to October. This winter season is when you’ll want to safari in Kruger, Madikwe, Pilanesberg or KwaZulu-Natal as the animals are easier to spot as the bush is thinner and the animals will be out looking for water. If it’s a beach holiday you’re after, Cape Town is hottest between November and March. Alternatively the KwaZulu-Natal coast is sunny all year round. Even the winters are mild.
